Sleep Lab

Sleep apnea can cause greater problems than just a loss of sleep. Untreated apnea has been linked to high blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia).

You may have sleep apnea if you answer “yes” to one or more questions of the following:

Not sleeping like a baby?

  1. Do you wake up repeatedly during the night?
  2. Do you have persistent snoring?
  3. Do you stop breathing for more than ten seconds at a time?
  4. Are you tired after 8 hours of sleep?
  5. Are you kept awake with moving/twitching of arms or legs?

We have the latest technology available in our PSG (polysomnogram-sleep study) labs. Each room has a home-like atmosphere with comfortable amenities for your overnight stay. Diagnostic studies will be conducted by a specially trained sleep lab technician to determine if you have sleep apnea. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, your physician will discuss treatment options with you.

Time and Place

The sleep lab is located on the first floor of Adams Memorial Hospital. Sleep studies will be done at your physicians request. You or your physician may call the Central Scheduling Department for an appointment.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is when a person stops breathing during sleep because his or her airway collapses and prevents air from getting into the lungs.

What Happens if OSA is not Treated?

People who do not seek treatment for OSA can be at increased risk for:

High Blood Pressure

Heart Disease

Heart Attack

Stroke

Fatigue-related motor vehicle and work-related accidents

Decreased quality of life

Treatments

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) provides a gentle flow of positive-pressure air through a nasal mask to keep the airway open during sleep.

With CPAP Therapy

  • Breathing Becomes regular and snoring stops
  • Oxygen levels in the blood become normal
  • Restful sleep is restored
  • Quality of life is improved
  • Risk for high blood pressure, heart disease,
  • Heart attack, stroke, and vehicular or work ccidents is reduced
