Adams Memorial Hospital has installed a 1.5 Tesla Magnetom magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, allowing it to provide
outstanding MRI diagnostic capability to physicians in the Decatur
area. This machine is the latest generation of high field, short
bore MRI systems. It delivers the fastest scanning times and highest
resolution images available. The system is from Siemens Medical,
one of the world's leading manufacturers of diagnostic imaging
equipment.
"The short bore Siemens System we have installed incorporates
the very latest MRI technology and provides exceptionally clear,
sharp images. It is of tremendous diagnostic benefit to the
community," said Sally Minnick, the Radiology Director at Adams
Memorial Hospital. Key benefits of the Siemens System are its
short length and large opening which especially benefit
claustrophobic and larger patients. With its wider couch and bore,
our MRI delivers a new standard in patient comfort, combined with
the best image quality available.
MRI's are one of the easiest and most comfortable exams you may
experience. The technologist will simply ask you to lie down
on a cushioned table. A device call a "coil" will be placed
over or under you. It is specialized to produce the clearest
picture of the area it is placed over. When you are
comfortably positioned, the table will move through the magnet.
The technologist will then step into the control area, while staying
in constant contact with you both visually and through an intercom.
As the exam proceeds, you will hear a muffled thumping sound for
several minutes at a time. Relax and lie as still as possible.
Any movement during this time will blur the picture. Other
than the sound, the MRI creates no "physical" sensation.
For Your Personal Safety
If you are having an MRI, please inform your doctor or the
technologist if you have:
*Cardiac Pacemaker
*An artificial heart valve
*Metal plate, pine or other metallic implant
*Intrauterine device, such as Copper-7 IUD
*Aneurysm clips
*Previous gunshot wound
*Ever been a metal worker
*Permanent (tattoo) eyeliner
Any metallic substance can affect the quality of the diagnostic
images. Also, be sure to tell us if you are pregnant.
Metallic objects often give a bright or blank spot in the picture.
To help your doctor make the best diagnosis, you will be asked to
remove your eyeglasses, jewelry, dentures, hearing aids and any
other metallic objects you are carrying.
You must have a physician's order to schedule your MRI.
After hour appointments are available for patients who cannot get
off work for day appointments. To schedule and MRI, please
call 724-2145 x1507.
A stereo system is available for patients to hear music during
the procedure.
