What is Pulmonary Rehab?

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is designed to better the lives of those with breathing difficulties through education and encouragement. The intent of the program is to improve the quality of life and make participants’ lives more productive and enjoyable.

Participants will learn breathing techniques, which will be used later in training. If your breathing disability is in a moderate to severe stage, training will be more of an effort, but it can be accomplished. No patient is ever beyond training. Of course, it’s better to participate in a pulmonary rehabilitation program before the breathing disability becomes severe.

Please note - if you don’t use your breathing techniques, you will lose the progress you have made.

How long will I be enrolled in Pulmonary Rehab?

The program is tailored to each individual needs. Some participants only need the education and a little incentive before they are ready to graduate from the program. Other participants may require more attention, support, and time.

What if I am oxygen dependent ?

Participating in Pulmonary Rehabilitation will not necessarily take you off oxygen. Decreasing dependency on oxygen should not be the goal in pulmonary rehab. Oxygen is a medication prescribed by your physician because it is needed for health purposes. However, some participants in the pulmonary rehab program have seen the amount of oxygen decreased due to increased strength and endurance.

What will my insurance cover?

Everyone’s insurance has different coverage. Please contact your insurance company to obtain the following information:

• Does your policy cover Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
• What percentage of the cost is covered?
• Is there a limit to the number of sessions covered?

Where is the Pulmonary Rehab program located?

The program is located the Worthman Fitness Center.

How do I join the Pulmonary Rehab program?

A physician's order is required to participate in pulmonary Rehabilitation at Adams Memorial Hospital. If you are interested, please discuss the program with your physician.
